A few steps away from the Church of the Savior there is one more monument installed in 1849 on the occasion of 140 anniversary of the Battle of Poltava in the place of Peter the Great rest. It is an interesting fact that it is the only one monument in the world memorializing the place of sleep of a crowned person.
The monument top part contains a composition of military attributes of Old Russian soldier – a sword with a blade turned into a side of the Battle of Poltava with a shield and helmet above this sword.
The following words are carved on the monument:
«Peter the Great rested here after his deeds.

Some time ago in this place there was a wooden house of Grygorii Magdenko Cossack from famous Cossack-foreman family line of Magdenko. During defense of Poltava fortress against the Swedes this house was served as headquarters of O. Kelin – commandant of the city. On June 28, 1709 Russian tsar visited this house after a worship service at the Church of the Savior. However, the house of famous Cossack is not preserved and that is why the monument is called “in the place of Peter the Great rest”. One of the monument details – figure of a lion made first in the history of Russian monumental art by electroplating became an allegorical embodiment of Peter the Great. The project author is Saint-Petersburg architect O. Briullov (brother of famous painter K. Briullov). In 1937 the monument was demounted and the bronze details were prepared for remelting. However, in 1939 it was reconstructed on the occasion of 230 anniversary of the Battle of Poltava.
