Not large mansion of the first classical writer of modern Ukrainian literature – Ivan Petrovych Kotlyarevskyi is located behind the Assumption Cathedral, almost on the edge of Mazurivsyi ravine. Since the late ХІХ century the citizens of Poltava call this place as Ivanova Gora in honor of their famous landsman, author of evergreen works such as “Eneida”, “Natalka Poltavka” and “Moskal-charivnyk”.
In early 50s of the ХVІІІ century a grandfather Ivan – deacon of the Assumption Cathedral bought the house where the poet was born. Unfortunately, the original house of Kotlyarevskyi family is not preserved. After the poet death in 1838 the house came into possession to his house-keeper and later a local garrison command was formed there. In summer 1845 Taras Shevchenko visited the house of Ivan Petrovych Kotlyarevskyi. The great kobza player took the opportunity and drew the house of famous citizen of Poltava. Namely this picture was used when creating schematic design for reconstruction of the mansion in 1969. This year was declared by UNESCO as a year of Kotlyarevskyi on the occasion of 200th anniversary of Ivan Pertovych birth.
The reconstructed museum complex includes the poet house, tiny room, shed and water well-sweep. The house represents a typical Ukrainian accommodation consisted of a font room, kitchen, bedchamber where the poet cabinet is located and a living room. Along the entire house beneath the ceiling there is an authentic beam taken from grandfather house. The following words are carved on the beam:
«Создася дом сей во имя Отца и Сына и Святого Духа. Аминь.
Року 1705 месяца Августа 1».
(This house was built in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
1st of August year 1705).

The house interior with exhibition of poet’s own things, manuscripts of his works, as well as furniture of the nobility of late ХІХ century is maximally accurately represented due to recollections of poet contemporaries. In 1971the poet bust made by people’s artist of Ukraine – H. Kalchenko was installed at the entrance to the house.
Today the museum-mansion of Ivan Kotlyarevskyi is a site of historic significance in the yard of which a visitor finds himself in the world of Ukrainian culture of ХVІІІ – early ХІХ centuries.
