The idea of creating a museum to Ivan Kotliarevsky in Poltava has become especially important in the late 19th century, when the Ukrainian intelligentsia was preparing to celebrate the glorious jubilee – the centenary of the first publication of the Eneyida. But troubled beginning of the 20th century did not promote this idea. Only half a century later, when in the difficult post-war year of 1948 Poltava was visited by prominent figures of Ukrainian culture O. Vyshnia, Yu. Smolych, A. Malyshko, M. Nahnybida, actor G. Jurs’ky to mark the 150th anniversary of the first publication of the Eneyida, this idea was put into practice.
In 1950 it was decreed by the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR to establish the museum, and already on the 28th of September 1952 I. P. Kotliarevsky Poltava Literary and Memorial Museum received its first visitors.
The museum exhibition is located in an old dwelling house of the early 19th century, which according to the legend, belonged to famous Russian poet, playwright, social activist V.V.Kapnist. The interior halls layout is enfiladed. This is a wooden, clay – smeared, one-storied and U-shaped in plan building. Compositional axis of the front façade is emphasized by four column portico with Doric order with balustrade on both sides of the stairs.
The museum exhibition is located in 6 halls: four of which contain materials that highlight the life and career of the writer, while the other two – commemorate Kotlyarevsky. A separate hall is devoted to the history of the creation and publication of the poem Eneyida. This is where the unique first edition of this work of 1798 is on display. The materials of the hall # 3 are dedicated to the activities of Kotliarevsky, as an artistic director of the Poltava Free Theater and a playwright. Here one can see the first editions of plays, posters, photos of theater collectives and individual artists in the Kotliarevsky`s plays, as well as rare materials on the first performers of the main roles.
