Poltava is one of the oldest cities of Ukraine. In the times of the Kievan Rus the city was the part of the largest Principality – the Principality of Pereyaslavl. In those times the city was called Ltava and was the southward defense outpost against attacks of southern nomads. The city was lucky to have its own Christopher Columbus – the discoverer whose name was first mentioned with this settlement. This discoverer is Prince Ihor Svyatoslavovych of the Principality of Novgorod-Seversk and the hero of “The tale of Ihor’s Campaign” poem. Namely due to circumstances of his military campaign against cuman people in order to protect southern defense lines of the Principality the first record on Ltava in the Hypatian Codex of 1174 appeared.

However, archeological data give reasons to believe that the settlement has older history. Due to numerous material evidences of archeological excavations in the territory of Old city one may talk of 1100 years history of Poltava ancient settlement founded in early Scythians period in VII–VI centuries B.C. Later the settlement remains of Romny culture dated the second half of VIIІ – ХІ centuries were found in this territory. Basing particularly on archeologists’ findings in September 1999 Poltava for the first time celebrated its“1100-th anniversary of continuous existence of Poltava ancient settlement”.
