The cathedral bell tower preserved in its original from the moment of construction, having withstood turbulent 30s of ХХ century, years of the Second World War and equally dramatic postwar years. By the miracle the forty-meter high construction did not become a pedestal for the monument to I. Stalin – “leader of the peoples”. Thanks to God this madness didn’t happen leaving us the unique monument which comprises characters of two styles – late Baroque and early Classicism the characteristic feature of which is a high spire of the construction.
The real beauty of the bell tower is two tones ringing of “Kuzy-Kermen” (translated from the Tatar language as “woman fortress”) which can be heard far from the city. The bell was molded in 1695by famous Kyiv master Aphanasii Petrovych from trophy guns of the eponymous Turkish fortress acquired by Cossacks of Poltava regiment headed by Colonel Pavlo Hertsyk (today it is Beryslav city of Kherson region). During its molding more than 400 kg of silver was used in order to improve the tone and volume of ringing. Until 1876 “Kuzy-Kermen” was on the third level of the bell tower and was a striking part of the main city clock located on the last fourth level. In 1930 the bell was removed. During the years of the Second World War as a metal scrap “Kuzy-Kermen” was sent to Krasnoyarsk. Poltava locomotive repair plant on valance of which was the bell also was evacuated to this city. Only in 1956 “Kuzy-Kermen” bell came back to Poltava. Today this unique monument can be seen in “Hetman hole” of Poltava local history museum named after V. Krychevskyi.
New bells of the Assumption Cathedral molded at Poltava locomotive repair plant were hallowed on May 9, 2004 by archbishops Poltavskyi and Kremenchutskyi Evsevii (Kievan Patriarchate). The largest bell with weigh of 240 kg was named as “Beauty Poltava” the other ones were named after famous countrymen of Ivan Kotlyarevskyi and Panas Myrnyi.
