Up to the beginning of ХІХ century the general post office of southern part of the Empire was located in Kyiv city. With the appearance of Poltava province the question of foundation of post office in Poltava came up. In 1809 due to mediation of the first governor-general knyaz Oleksii Kurakin there was opened a Post office of Little Russia – the first building in the Round Square. In the beginning of XIX century the significance of Poltava Post Office was incredibly important since it was an exchange point from Kyiv to Kharkiv and Crimea. However, the administrative institution existed not very long: in1822 from considerations of closeness to Kyiv the Post Office was transferred from Poltava to Chernihiv.
It is interesting to note that the father of future globally renowned writer Mykola Gogol – Vasyl Gogol-Yanovskyi served at Poltava Post Office over the last years of its reorganization. By the way, for a short period of time Mykola Gogol and his younger brother Ivan studied at Poltava district school located in side part of the Post Office; today this fact is evidenced by memorial plate opened in 2009 on the occasion of the 200-th anniversary of Mykola Gogol’s birth.
After this, up to 1861 the building was used as a city gymnasium for men. And then the old building of the Post Office was reconstructed, extended in its sizes and opened as a Women’s school and then – Mariinska gymnasium. Famous Poltava women were the graduates of that gymnasium which was closed after final establishment of the Soviet regime in Poltava in 1919. In particular, both daughters of the writer-humanist Volodymyr Kovalenko studied there.
In 1943 in the times of fascist occupation of the city the building of former Post Office was completely burnt down.
Its modern traits the building acquired after the last major rebuilding-reconstruction in 1963, since then it became a two-floor all-brick building with six columns. This is the only two-floor building of the Round Square ensemble.
From 1991 the building is functioning as Poltava city school of arts which in 2008 obtained the name of famous native of Poltavshchina, singer and honored artist of Ukraine – Raisa Kyrychenko.
